Vrdnik Monastery - Ravanica

Vrdnik-Ravanica Monastery, also known as Mala Ravanica, is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in Vrdnik, which was built in the 16th century on the site of a 13th-century church. The monastery was named after the Ravanica monastery in Pomoravlje, where Prince Lazar, who died in the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, was buried.

Vrdnik-Ravanica Monastery was the place where Serbian rulers and patriarchs took shelter and were buried during the Turkish rule, as well as the place where the great Serbian poet and monk Dositej Obradović lived and created. The monastery is known for its beauty and architecture, which is a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. There is also a rich treasury in the monastery, where precious items such as icons, books, vestments, crosses and relics are kept.

Coal mine and steam power plant

Vrdnik was one of the first places in Serbia where a coal mine was opened, in 1804, after large deposits were discovered. The mine was the center of industrial development and attracted miners from all over the Habsburg Empire, who formed new populated parts of the countryside, such as Old and New Colony. The mine worked until 1968, when it was closed due to the depletion of deposits and the unprofitability of exploitation.

Within the mine there was also a steam power plant, which was built in 1911 and was one of the first power plants in Serbia. The power plant supplied electricity to the mine, the village and the surrounding area, and it was also the place where a film with soundtrack was shown for the first time in Serbia. The power plant was destroyed during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, but its remains remain, testifying to the former glory and importance of this facility.

Vrdnica tower

The Vrdnica tower is the remains of a medieval castle, which was built on the foundations of a Roman fortification from the 3rd century. The castle was probably built by the Roman emperor Probus, who was born in nearby Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica). The castle served to defend Vrdnik and partly Sirmium from enemy attacks, and the first written information about it dates back to 1315. The castle was owned by various feudal lords, such as Hunjadi, Branković, Nemanjić, Despotović and others. The castle was demolished and rebuilt several times, and today only the tower is left, which is about 20 meters high and has four floors. The tower is a symbol of Vrdnik and one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the settlement.

And that's not all...

In addition to the listed attractions, Vrdnik has much more to offer its visitors.
