When you enjoy a glass of this drink, remember that you are also drinking a part of history and tradition that lasts for centuries.

Rakija is not only a Serbian drink, but also the national drink of most Balkan nations. However, Serbia is definitely its biggest fan and producer. Although it is known for its high alcohol content, brandy is drunk with pleasure and moderation. A glass of brandy in the morning has been part of Serbian tradition for centuries. Even the story of her name is not ordinary. Brandy has an interesting history of its name, which is believed to be derived from the Arabic language. The word brandy comes from the Arabic word "al-rak", which means "sweat". Some say it's because of the way brandy is strained from the cauldron, while others think it's because of the effect brandy has on the body.

Serbs started producing brandy only at the end of the 19th century. Before that, Serbia was the land of wine, which had a rich wine culture since Roman times. Unfortunately, the vineyards in Serbia were destroyed by the phylloxera pest, which led to a large drop in wine production. In that difficult period, Serbs found a new way to use their fruit - they made brandy. Most often made from plums, brandy has become a symbol of Serbian resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. Today, Serbian rakija is a testimony to the ability of a nation to accept changes and create something uniquely its own.

Young brandy festival? What exactly is "young" brandy?

Brandy is a strong alcoholic drink. It is produced by distilling the mixture that results from the alcoholic fermentation of fruit. After the first distillation, the so-called "soft" brandy with a lower percentage of alcohol, and the second distillation of "soft" brandy produces "toasted" brandy, i.e. the famous toasted brandy.

Toasted brandy is usually left to "age" in wooden barrels to age and acquire the aroma and specific color of the wood from which the barrel was made. Young brandy at this festival is special in that it is made exclusively from the grapes of the year in which the event is held. She did not give up and is most often defined as "drinkable and mild". A particularly interesting part is when the tasters guess which fruit is made of which brandy, although we believe that most people don't care after several glasses.
